High Insulation Standards

Of all the characteristics of our homes, it is the heating system which is most often praised by our purchasers.

Ask a few people on our development when you visit the site.

Cumber Homes are amongst the most highly insulated you can buy.

Walls have 4" of high quality insulation as standard, lofts get  6". The floor itself is also fully insulated with polystyrene under the whole floor.  The materials used are shown in the picture on the right. Of course all windows are also double glazed.

Many builders do not insulate party walls much, assuming that no heat is lost there.  Its not true - the cavity between dwellings can lose lots of heat as it is probably not quite aitrtight. We fully insulate all party walls both sides.

We pack in a full 8" of insulation into every one (4" each side). The picture on the left shows the second 4" layer being fitted.  Why do we do this? - because it gives superb soundproofing between the dwellings.

We also save on the amount of external wall by linking dwellings - less outside wall means less heat will be lost.

The end result  is dwellings with quite amazingly low heating costs. For a semi detached bungalow all electicity costs are around £11-12 per week. This covers heating lighting cooking & standing charges- ie everything. For a Mark 10a house the all in figure would be about £17 per week.  (figs 2007)

Compare what you are spending at the moment, add up your gas and electricity (and coal bills if appropriate) and then see what the total is when added together.

Very few people realise how high their bills are until they add them together. You will probably be looking at a significant saving.

Comfort levels are very high with our heating system, which is a form of storage heating. The floor of the bungalow is gently warmed during the off peak period when power is cheaper. This provides stored  heat which lasts right through the day. The photo shows the heating cables prior to the floor screed being laid.

Some people have bad experience of storage heating, when you question further they nearly always live in houses without  good insulation. It is obvious really - if you want to keep heat over an extended period the better your walls are insulated the more successful you will be.

We have used this system for well over 30 years - it works.  Just ask someone who lives in one of our properties how they find it when you visit.
