KAYAKING IN DARTMOUTH

Here is what people need to learn early on:

It is good if an instructor stands beside people when they do their first capsize.   People are always nervous doing this.  "What if it goes wrong"  they say.

The instructor can easily right a boat when standing next to it in water about 4 feet deep.

He will watch you all the time and intervene if necessary.   Here is how he would right the boat:

                                         instructor flips kayak back up

You are very safe if your first capsize is in a pool, with an instructor beside you.

In a capsize you bang three times, pull off the spray deck and push the boat away with two hands

Here is a real first capsize, it takes 5 - 6 seconds to get out          a first capsize

If you are on your own its useful to know how too swim a kayak           swim a kayak

Actually this is a good way to warm up too.  If you capsize in chiily water it is a good idea to warm up this way before being put back into your boat.

How to do a back paddle to turn a kayak.            push to turn

This is more effective than doing three or four forward paddles on the other side, which often sends the front of the kayak too far round in the end.
