Each year we do a little sea
kayaking. We sometimes hire in a few from an outfit in
Torbay which has sea kayaks available for community use for £5 per
day. A few members have sea kayaks of their
own, and we can hire them in for those that don't. It is possible to fit in a
tent and all your food for a few days. Sea kayaks go fast -
shorter kayaks cannot keep up with them.
Our most ambitious trip so far saw a group of us paddle from Dartmouth all the way to
Looe (yes thats in Cornwall folks), with three nights camping on the way.
Crossing Plymouth sound with car ferries and gin palaces roaming
around was tricky, a bit like crossing a busy road.
Our keenest Sea Kayaker is Ian Dring,
give him a ring on 01803 770509. Below we are seen going round
the Eddystone Lighthouse, a challenging paddle Ian organised in August 2007, we
started from Plymouth and were supported by a yacht and a rib. The
lighthouse is 12 miles out to sea. Naturally we take VHF and flares on major
trips of this kind, handheld waterproof VHFs are excellent and mean we
can inform the coastguard of our movements and raise the alarm if
needed..
